and British Muslims towards Conventional and Islamic Banking.' This
seminar will look at how Muslims in Australia and the UK negotiate the
rule of interest or /riba/. This seminar argues that despite religious

A COMPLETE DIVORCE'
The Centre for Islamic Law & Society (University of Melbourne) has
organised a seminar titled, 'Muslim Women in Australia and the

upon qualitative interviews with divorced Muslim women, local
religious authorities, Muslim women's support groups and legal
networks in Australia. This seminar argues that although some women
may feel powerless in their attempts to gain a Muslim divorce from
local religious authorities, women in the sample determinedly sought
other ways to achieve a 'complete' divorce, utilising avenues
including social mechanisms, statutory laws of Muslim and Western
countries and new interpretations of shariah texts.

(University of Melbourne).
